Sometimes we receive e-mail from Roman Catholics and other Catholic-friendly individuals who claim that we are lying about Catholicism or are ignorant of the true teachings of the Roman Catholic Church when we say, "People who were raised in the Roman Catholic Church were told that, if they were 'baptized' into the Roman Catholic Church and faithfully performed the required sacraments, they would be all right when they left this world. The worst that could happen is that they might have to spend some time in 'purgatory' where the flames would purge their sins. THIS IS TOTALLY FALSE AND A GREAT DECEPTION."
Rather than answer these various e-mails charging us with "ignorance" of the catechism, we decided to simply demonstrate from the Roman Catholic catechism that what we are saying is true.
Their Claim that Baptism is Necessary:
Their Claim that Sacraments are Necessary:
Their Claim that the Worst that can Happen is Purgatory:
1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent.
Some Other Claims Supporting these False Doctrines:
980 It is through the sacrament of Penance that the baptized can be reconciled with God and with the Church:
Penance has rightly been called by the holy Fathers "a laborious kind of baptism." This sacrament of Penance is necessary for salvation for those who have fallen after Baptism, just as Baptism is necessary for salvation for those who have not yet been reborn.
1446 Christ instituted the sacrament of Penance for all sinful members of his Church: above all for those who, since Baptism, have fallen into grave sin, and have thus lost their baptismal grace and wounded ecclesial communion. It is to them that the sacrament of Penance offers a new possibility to convert and to recover the grace of justification. The Fathers of the Church present this sacrament as "the second plank [of salvation] after the shipwreck which is the loss of grace."
We believe it is obvious based on the above evidence that
our assertions concerning the Roman Catholic Church are correct.
